Supreme Court dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that challenged the electoral manual and provisions that allowed outstation students to vote from their place of study.
The counsel for petitioner argued that whether allowing them would mean that there is a ‘meaningful expression of opinion ‘ and stated that the student would be totally disconnected with the political dynamics.
To which, the bench consisting of CJI Sanjiv Khanna stated that this provision would ensure a meaningful expression of opinion . He also added that disallowing them would also impact teh total voter turnout.
