SC to pronounce verdict on Section 6A of citizenship Act,1955

A Constitutional Bench headed by CJI D.Y. Chandrachud will pronounce verdict on the constitutional validity of Section 6A of citizenship Act. Section 6A allows the foreigners who had entered Assam before January 1, 1966 and been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the state, would have all the rights and obligations of Indian citizens. Those who entered Assam between January 1,1966 and March 25,1971, would also have the rights and obligations except the right to vote for 10 years. This section was inserted as a special provision in the Act in the furtherance of ‘Assam accord’. The petitioners have blamed Section 6A for rise of infiltration in Assam.
