A PIL has been filed in Bombay High Court challenging the transfer of salt pan lands to construct rental housing and slum rehabilitation. The grounds of filing the petition was that the construction was carried out at the cost of destroying coastal ecosystem. The petition is filed against the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Environment and Climate change and State of Maharashtra for transferring the land from the Centre to state for infrastructure development under Dharavi Rehabilitation Project. The petitioners argued that as per the Apex Court, it is mandatory to preserve and protect the wetland so mentioned whereas ironically, the impugned policy of the government would imbalance the ecosystem and cause damage.
