A Constitutional Bench of Apex Court upheld section 6A of citizenship Act as a valid law with 4:1 majority. CJI D.Y. Chandrachud emphasized that Section 6A was the legislative action to the issue of growing migration which was in furtherance of the political action in the form of Assam Accord. This section barred citizenship for those people who entered Assam after March25,1971. The Bench pointed out the failure of the government to timely detect and deport the post-1971 immigrants from Bangladesh.
