Supreme Court rejects Gujarat’s review plea on Bilkis Bano case remarks.
The Supreme Court has rejected the review petitions filed by the Gujarat government and the 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case, stating there was no error or merit in the petitions. A bench comprising Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan upheld its earlier judgment, which had annulled the premature release of the convicts, who were serving life sentences for their involvement in the 2002 Gujarat riots. The Court ruled that Gujarat was not the “appropriate government” to consider remission, within the meaning of Section 432 of the CrPC, as the trial was held in Maharashtra, despite Gujarat’s claim of following the Court’s May 2022 directive.
